Hallux or Bunion

A bunion is a bony protrusion that forms at the joint of the base of the big toe, when it puts pressure on the adjacent toe causing the inflammation of the joints and the growth of the foot bone.

Causes
The factors that could cause the bunions are the following:

Genetics

The structure of the feet determines the way of walking, thus influencing the development of the bunions.

Inappropriate shoes

When the shoe is adjusted, it limits the movement of the fingers. The use of high heels can also encourage their training.

Problems of birth

People who have flat foot of birth or the big toe longer than the rest tend to develop this problem.

Deforming diseases

Arthritis is an example of this type of disease.

Injuries and age

Depends on the damage that the foot may have suffered over the years.

Non-surgical treatment

  • Wear comfortable shoes.
  • Use non-medicated shoe insoles or pads.
  • Drugs prescribed by a doctor.
  • Compresses with ice.

Surgical options

Surgery is recommended when the symptoms have not been alleviated with another type of treatment and the pain is very persistent..

There are several surgical procedures for bunions:

  • Remove the swollen tissue around the joint of the big toe.
  • Removal of a part of the bone in order to straighten the finger.
  • Realign the long bone between the back of the foot and the big toe to straighten the abnormal angle in the joint of the big toe.
  • Merge the bones of the affected joint permanently.
